  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) will be supplied to City of Auburn Hills as part of a demonstration project by Chrysler Group LLC
  • Real world city miles to be accumulated on demonstration vehicles over the next three years
  • Fleet of vehicles developed in partnership with U.S. Department of Energy
  • Ram 1500 plug-in electric hybrid test trucks will be used to evaluate city drive cycles, charging performance, fuel economy and real-world performance

October 3, 2011 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – Chrysler Group LLC, working in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), will deliver four demonstration fleet plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) Ram 1500 pickup trucks to the City of Auburn Hills, Mich.

The PHEV Ram 1500 pickups, delivered by Abdullah Bazzi, senior manager of the Chrysler Group’s advanced hybrid vehicle project, are part of a national demonstration fleet of 140 vehicles that will be used during the next three years to evaluate customer usage, drive cycles, charging, thermal management, fuel economy, emissions and impact on the region’s electric grid. In addition to Auburn Hills, seven other partners across the United States are slated to receive vehicles for demonstration and testing purposes.

“Cities have been carefully selected to help Chrysler Group LLC collect a wide range of data. Auburn Hills is in our backyard and offers a combination of suburban and rural driving that is ideal as a test cycle for these vehicles. The constant charging will allow us to measure the impact on battery life and charging efficiency.”

Chrysler’s Advanced Hybrid Vehicle Project

Chrysler Group LLC has delivered Ram 1500 PHEV trucks to the city of Yuma, Ariz., to take full advantage of hot weather and conduct thermal testing in the desert southwest. Other cities that have received the demonstration PHEV Ram 1500 pickups include San Francisco and Sacramento, Calif., Charlotte, N.C., Boston, Mass., and Albany, N.Y.

“Auburn Hills has worked diligently to implement policies and procedures to create a municipal infrastructure that accommodates the growing use of hybrid electric vehicles. We have taken a leading role in smart planning for alternative energy options that will fuel tomorrow’s vehicles.”

-Pete Auger
Auburn Hills City Manager

Auburn Hills currently has seven charging stations. Three EV charging stations are located downtown and two each are located on the municipal campus and at the Department of Public Service.

Strictly a demonstration program, there are no plans for a production version of the PHEV Ram 1500 truck at this time.

Cities and states were selected to evaluate temperature extremes, urban traffic cycles and diverse climates and geographies.

The PHEV Ram 1500 includes a liquid-cooled 12.9kWhr lithium ion battery pack and a 6.6 kilowatt (kW) on-board charger. Additional features include AC power generation of up to 6.6kW, directional charging, reverse power flow and full regenerative braking used to capture more energy. For fuel economy improvements, the front axle of the four-wheel-drive automatic transmission can be disconnected when not needed. The powertrain also includes a 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine and a two-mode hybrid transmission. The 5.7-liter HEMI is equipped with a Fuel Saver technology that improves fuel efficiency at highway speeds by shutting down fuel delivery to up to four cylinders.

PHEV Ram 1500

The battery pack is located under the second-row seat of the pickup and is liquid cooled to help maintain a consistent battery temperature. For on-the-job electrical power tools, a 240 volt/30 amp four-prong outlet and 120volt/20amp duplex outlet power strip is located in the rear box.

Urban use will be tracked to measure battery performance and overall hybrid efficiency with the demonstration fleet of pickups. Other uses include military bases where vehicles will be able to provide power back to the electric grid in what is termed “reverse power flow” of up to 6.6kW.

Funding for the program in part is provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 through the Transportation Electrification Initiative sponsored by the DOE. The grant, totaling $48 million from DOE and $49.4 million from Chrysler Group LLC, was designed to develop vehicles that will be cost efficient for consumers, satisfy safety concerns of daily travel without recharging and help reduce dependence on foreign oil.

The Chrysler Group LLC also is developing a similar fleet of 25 Chrysler Town & Country minivans with plug-in hybrid technology for demonstration and evaluation that will be allocated to select cities later this year.

About Toledo Machining

Construction of the Toledo Machining facility began in 1964 with production starting in 1966. The plant expanded in 1969, adding 226,000 square-feet, increasing its overall footprint to more than 1.2 million square-feet. Because the plant produces several products specified as vehicle safety items, Toledo Machining requires precision machining operations to meet high quality standards.

August 16, 2011 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – Set to debut during New York Fashion Week (Sept. 8 – 15) on Fashion’s Night Out (Sept. 8), the new Fiat 500 by Gucci limited-edition models represent the perfect combination of craftsmanship and style, and bring together two of Italy’s most respected brands. In the year that sees the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy and Gucci’s 90th anniversary, these special editions of the Fiat 500 and 500 Cabrio have been customized by Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini in partnership with Fiat’s Centro Stile.

“In the 50s, the Fiat 500 created a style revolution when it first hit the road. It quickly became the must-have car of its time. Travelling in style has also been at the heart of Gucci ever since Guccio Gucci founded his company as a producer of leather trunks, suitcases and handbags in 1921. So, when Lapo Elkann suggested the idea of this collaboration it struck me as a perfect opportunity to create a new modern travel statement in Gucci’s 90th anniversary year.”

-Frida Giannini
Creative Director, Gucci

Inspired by neo-classic black-and-white film, the new black-and-white Fiat 500 and 500c by Gucci models are finished in unique eye-catching glossy pearl-glass paint. These two distinct colors complement one another: black with detailing in shiny chrome paired with interiors that contrast sharp black and white for a contemporary and racy attitude. White with satin chrome detailing and ivory and black interiors for a softer, sophisticated look.

“With Gucci as our design partner, we’ve amplified the Italian style of our Fiat 500 with unique exterior and interior looks that will make the car truly unique on the road. This special edition adds dimension to the Fiat 500 portfolio and will appeal to North American customers who appreciate Italian style just as much as modern technology, value and fuel efficiency.”

-Laura Soave
Head of FIAT Brand North America

The worldwide launch of the Fiat 500 by Gucci has been developed with the support of Lapo Elkann and his agency, Independent Ideas, and includes a fully integrated above- and below-the-line campaign. Commenting on the collaboration, Lapo Elkann said, “I am honored that I was able to connect Fiat and Gucci, especially in such an important anniversary year for Italy. Being Italian, it makes me proud to have contributed to this Fiat 500 by Gucci, which brings together the spirit of two brands that so perfectly symbolize our country’s savoir faire in the world. It has indeed been very gratifying to work again on the car I love most with Fiat’s Centro Stile and with Frida Giannini.”

The exclusive Fiat 500 by Gucci models feature several exclusive design elements that highlight the Fiat 500’s iconic silhouette. A signature Gucci green/red/green web stripe runs along the entire bodyside perimeter on the Fiat 500 by Gucci, or across the length of the power-retractable cloth top on the Fiat 500c by Gucci model. Chrome cursive “Gucci” signatures complete the door frames and hatchback, complementing the satin-chrome exterior accents, such as mirrors, door handles and hood spear, which are highlighted in signature diamond black or diamond white glossy pearl-glass paint. Adding to the vehicle’s sculpted fenders are uniquely designed, retro-inspired 15-inch aluminum wheels with interlocking “GG” hubcaps and brake pads, which have been lacquered in signature Gucci green.

Premium leather accents are also found on the interior door panels and on the hand-stitched leather-wrapped steering wheel, finished in a two-tone ivory and white combination.

Additionally, the Fiat 500 by Gucci features premium amenities, including the all-new six-speed automatic transmission with driver-selectable gear changes, BLUE&ME™ hands-free communication technology with USB port, eco:Drive™ Application and iPod control capability, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, Bose® Energy Efficient Series audio system with six premium speakers and subwoofer, power sunroof, automatic climate control, seven standard air bags, security alarm, power windows, power door locks, power heated mirrors, speed control, fog lamps and reconfigurable Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) with trip computer, miles-to-empty average fuel economy and tire-pressure monitoring display (TPM).
