2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392

2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392

June 7, 2011 12:56 PM- Tuesday morning, Chrysler Group announced a number of upper management changes and the rebirth of SRT — Street and Racing Technology — as its own brand once again.

First, there’s the management changes:

Fred Diaz

  • Yesterday: president/CEO of Ram Brand and lead executive for U.S. sales
  • Today: Still president/CEO of Ram Brand, but now also president/CEO of Chrysler de Mexico, including responsibility for Latin America. This region is now under Diaz, separate from Mike Manley, lead excutive for international operations, as well as president/CEO of Jeep® Brand.

The new Mexico/Latin America role for Diaz shows the growing importance of those markets for Chrysler Group‘s future success.

Reid Bigland

  • Yesterday: President/CEO of Chrysler Canada
  • Today: Still president/CEO of Chrysler Canada, as well as president/CEO of Dodge Brand and head of U.S. Sales.

In related news for Chrysler Canada, David Buckingham has moved from VP of sales to a new position, chief operating officer.

Ralph Gilles

  • Yesterday: President/CEO of Dodge Brand and senior vice president of Product Design for Chrysler Group
  • Today: Still senior VP of product design and now president/CEO of the newly recreated Street and Racing Technology Brand, our cross-brand performance unit. Gilles also has responsibilities for the company’s motorsports activities (same as before).

In addition, Joe ChamaSrour is reassigned to international operations and reports to Manley.

SRT

Chrysler launched the SRT Brand at the 2002 NAIAS “to create a line of industry-leading performance vehicles and parts.” While we still made SRT vehicles, there wasn’t as concerted effort in development and marketing in recent years.

With Gilles’s obvious passion for design, racing and the auto industry in general, he’s the ideal person within the company to assume leadership with the SRT Brand. Combined with his current design responsibilities, it’s really not a big change from his previous role with Dodge — just more focused on making sure customers have fun options for Chrysler Group cars.

2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

Through the end of May, Chrysler Group had sold 2,901 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 vehicles, the only SRT in the 2011 lineup. However, starting this fall, we’ll have four members to the SRT family with 2012 models of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 and the Chrysler 300 SRT8 (both unveiled at the NY International Auto Show), Dodge Charger SRT8 (unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show) and the Dodge Challenger SRT8.

May 25, 2011 12:13 AM- Mike Driehorst- It’s a day 23 months in the making, six years ahead of schedule, and a day during which Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne spoke both praise and caution.

And, the highlight transpired at 10:13 a.m. when Marchionne received confirmation from Citigroup that company’s wire and bank transfer of payments to the U.S., Canada and Ontario governments were received and Chrysler Group’s $6.7 billion loan was paid in full, with interest.

Marchionne spoke to Chrysler Group employees at the company’s headquarters at noon (above), and then headed to the Sterling Heights (MI) Assembly Plant for the 2 p.m. public portion of what he called the company’s “Independence Day.”

He was joined there by Assistant to President Obama for Manufacturing Policy Ron Bloom, and Vice President and Director, UAW Chrysler Department General Holiefield. Senior Vice President and Head of Manufacturing Scott Garberding made opening remarks.

During his comments, Marchionne said the “joy” of June 10, 2009, when the loan were made, “was conditioned by the sense of responsibility we all shared.

“Not just for the privilege we had been given of helping get an American icon back on its feet, but more importantly for our moral obligation to justify the support that American and Canadian taxpayers had given us.

“We knew we had to live up to the expectations of those who had made sacrifices on our behalf.”

As he has done so in the past, Marchionne cautioned about celebrating too much:

“Today is a major milestone for Chrysler Group, but our work is by no means finished….

“Repayment of the government loans closes an important chapter in our history, but we still have a great deal left to accomplish before regaining our rightful place in the automotive landscape.”

Nineteen vehicles were included in an online ballot and voted on by professional fleet managers, who were asked to consider which medium-duty truck model best fit their fleet requirements, including application effectiveness, durability, quality, servicing, maintenance, and lifecycle costs.

“The commercial truck segment is all about total cost of ownership. When you account for fuel economy, brake wear, tire wear and the best powertrain warranty in the business, Ram Chassis Cab trucks offer the lowest cost of ownership.”
