About the Ram 1500 Tradesman

Durability, reliability and value for the money are the top three considerations for truck customers. Their truck is the most important tool they own, one they’ll use every day and one that they depend on.

To meet those needs, Ram Tradesman offers better performance for the price than any other work truck.

Ram Tradesman starts with the Ram 1500, and adds useful features such as a standard HEMI V8 engine, six-speed transmission and Class IV trailer hitch with lighted above-bumper four- and seven-pin trailer wiring connectors. Ram Tradesman also comes with heavy-duty engine cooling, a heavy-duty transmission cooler and rugged Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires

Ram 1500 Tradesman combines an impressive 390 hp / 407 ft.-lb. of torque with 20 mpg fuel efficiency and delivers best-in-class standard work truck capability, towing 10,450 lbs.

The Ram 1500 Tradesman is designed to meet the needs of small businessmen, construction jobsites and commercial fleets. It’s a hard-working truck for hard-working people.

About the Award

The editorial team from Equipment Today, which reaches 77,000 construction equipment owners, and the Equipment Network on ForConstructionPros.com, the industry’s No. 1 construction web portal, tallied product inquiries for the last 12 months, including product introductions from the construction industry’s biggest North American trade show, CONEXPO-CON/AGG, which was held earlier this year.

Their analysis resulted in the final 2011 Equipment Today’s Contractors’ Top 50 Products, a listing of the industry’s foremost game changers. Additional information will be available in the September issue of Equipment Today and on ForConstructionPros.com.

PHEV Ram 1500

Auburn Hills, Mich. – Chrysler Group LLC, working in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), delivered the first of a demonstration fleet of Ram 1500 plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) pickup trucks to municipal officials in Yuma, Ariz., today.

The 10 PHEV Ram 1500 pickups delivered by Abdullah Bazzi, senior manager of the Chrysler Group’s advanced hybrid vehicle project, are part of a national demonstration fleet of 140 vehicles that will be used during the next three years to evaluate customer usage, drive cycles, charging, thermal management, fuel economy, emissions and impact on the region’s electric grid. In addition to Yuma, 11 other partners across the United States will receive vehicles for demonstration and testing purposes.

Strictly a demonstration program, there are no plans for a production version of the PHEV Ram 1500 truck at this time.

Cities and states were selected to evaluate temperature extremes, urban traffic cycles and diverse climates and geographies from North Dakota, Massachusetts, Hawaii and Arizona. Cities will include San Francisco and Sacramento, Calif.; Austin, Texas and Kansas City, Mo.

The Ram 1500 PHEV includes a liquid-cooled 12.9kWhr lithium ion battery pack and a 6.6 kilowatt (kW) on-board charger. Additional features include AC power generation of up to 6.6kW; directional charging; reverse power flow and full regenerative braking used to capture more energy. For fuel economy improvements, the front axle can be disconnected when not needed.

The powertrain also includes a 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine and a two-mode hybrid transmission. The 5.7-liter HEMI is equipped with a Multiple Displacement System (MDS) that improves fuel efficiency at highway speeds by shutting down fuel delivery to up to four cylinders.

The battery pack is located under the second-row seat of the pickup and is liquid cooled to help maintain a consistent battery temperature. For on-the-job electrical power tools, a 240 volt/30 amp four-prong outlet and 120volt/20amp duplex outlet power strip is located in the rear box.

“Cities have been carefully selected to help the Chrysler Group collect a wide range of data,” explained Abdullah Bazzi, senior manager of Chrysler’s advanced hybrid vehicle project. “Temperature extremes found in the cold of North Dakota or the heat of Arizona can have a severe impact on battery life and charging efficiency.”

The choice of a Ram 1500 pickup truck was based upon two-speed transmission technology that was readily available from a previous vehicle electrification project from the Chrysler Group.

Urban and rural use also will be tracked to measure battery performance and overall hybrid efficiency with the demonstration fleet of pickups. Other uses include military bases where vehicles will be able to provide power back to the electric grid in what is termed “reverse power flow” of up to 6.6kW.

Funding for the program in part is provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 through the Transportation Electrification Initiative sponsored by the DOE. The grant, totaling $48 million from DOE and $49.4 million from Chrysler Group, was designed to develop vehicles that will be cost efficient for consumers, satisfy safety concerns of daily travel without recharging and help reduce dependence on foreign oil.

The Chrysler Group also is developing a similar fleet of 25 Town & Country minivans with plug-in hybrid technology for demonstration and evaluation that will be allocated to select cities later this year.

More good news in the Ram world! It seems the Chrysler Group Brands have racked up quite a few awards lately, with the latest being awarded to the 2011 Ram Chassis Cabs.

Last week, Work Truck magazine named the Class 4 and 5 Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cab truck its 2011 Medium-Duty Truck of the Year.

Nineteen vehicles were included in an online ballot and voted on by professional fleet managers, who were asked to consider which medium-duty truck model best fit their fleet requirements, including application effectiveness, durability, quality, servicing, maintenance, and lifecycle costs.

“The commercial truck segment is all about total cost of ownership. When you account for fuel economy, brake wear, tire wear and the best powertrain warranty in the business, Ram Chassis Cab trucks offer the lowest cost of ownership.”

CEO and Head of U.S. Sales – Chrysler Group LLC

2011 Ram Adventurer

The Ram Truck Brand today announced that it would launch a new Ram 1500 model aimed squarely at first-time buyers and owners who are looking for a vehicle with performance and style that they can customize and make their own.

The as-yet-to be-named Ram 1500 model has been developed under the code name “Adventurer,” and borrows the formula of the highly acclaimed 2011 Ram Tradesman.

The Ram Tradesman — unveiled Feb. 9, at the Chicago Auto Show — is a value-priced, HEMI®-powered Ram 1500 regular cab truck that appeals to a cost-conscious, new-vehicle buyer who doesn’t want to give up performance and capability. The unnamed new Ram 1500, like the Ram Tradesman, offers buyers a standard HEMI V8 engine with its 20 mpg rating for the same price competitors are charging for their V6 engines.

“We know we have the formula right,” said Ram Truck President and CEO Fred Diaz. “Now we just need a great name that promotes pride of ownership. This new Ram model will be an attractive alternative for a younger or first-time buyer looking for performance at an affordable price. Case in point, it will have more horsepower and a lower base price than our competitors’ entry-level performance cars with the added benefit of versatility and capability.”

Ram Truck executives had planned to introduce the new Ram 1500 model later in the 2011 calendar year, but based on an overwhelming response to the Ram Tradesman, pulled ahead launch plans and opened the dealer ordering process with only a code name – Adventurer – to work with.

“This is going to be a great-looking, sports truck.” added Diaz. “A buyer will be able to drive off in a new HEMI-powered Ram Truck with money left over for other things, like Mopar accessories. There’s nothing in the market – and that includes other trucks, as well as cars — that can compete with this truck’s blend of style, exhilarating performance and value.”
