Last year, Chrysler Group was the first automotive company to replace traditional, bulky owner manuals with DVDs and user guides. This year, the company is introducing the industry’s first smartphone vehicle-information application. Information that used to be stuffed into the glove box will now be at your fingertips.

In addition to general vehicle information including vehicle operation, maintenance and warranty, this new app offers product-feature video demonstrations, connections with fellow owners via the company’s brands on social media sites, and access to customer care and 24-hour road-side assistance.

“With our vehicle-information app, we are taking customer care to a new level by creating a convenient, on-demand channel of communication with our customers,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar®, Chrysler Group LLC. “Creating this new channel of communication will enhance the customer experience. And it’s a great example of how we can add value to our vehicles and build brand identity. This new app will also be a source for potential customers to learn about our vehicles.”

Look for the Chrysler apps where you normally go to get your apps, such as the iPhone store or the Android Market.

It’s been a busy first full week of 2011 with Chrysler Group and Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Dealers.

In this week’s Under the Pentastar, Ed Garsten recaps various news and events from Chrysler Group, including:

Chrysler Group regained its historical leadership position in the minivan segment with its Dodge Grand Caravan claiming the world title, and the Chrysler Town & Country claiming the top spot in the U.S. during 2010.

Globally, the Grand Caravan out-dueled its sister minivan, the Town & Country, for the #1 ranking:

2010 Global Minivan Sales (Units)
Dodge Grand Caravan
160,005
Chrysler Town & Country
126,318
Honda Odyssey
119,062
Toyota Sienna
113,179

In addition to its strong U.S. showing (see table below), the Grand Caravan was a very strong presence for Chrysler Canada in 2010 with  55,306 units sold — making it the #3 selling vehicle overall in the country.

For 2011, the Grand Caravan has a new powertrain with more horsepower and more torque without sacrificing fuel economy; a significant suspension overhaul for an exceptional driving experience; new exterior and interior styling that focuses on craftsmanship and comfort; and safety features consumers expect.

In the U.S., the Chrysler Town & Country claimed the top spot:

2010 U.S. Minivan Sales (Units)
Chrysler Town & Country
122,275
Honda Odyssey
108,182
Dodge Grand Caravan
103,323
Toyota Sienna
98,337

In addition, the Chrysler Town & Country minivan led Chrysler Brand sales for 2010, and was the second best-selling vehicle for the entire company.

The new 2011 Chrysler Town & Country was designed with more than 40 standard safety and technology features, including SafetyTec™, which provides industry-leading features including ParkView® rear backup camera, Blind-spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection.”

Chrysler has announced that there will no longer be overlap in their line of minivans, i.e. you will no longer be able to purchase a Dodge Grand Caravan with the same features as a Chrysler Town and Country. Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Dealers will be seeing the Grand Caravan covering the base model (Dodge Grand Caravan Express) on up to where the Town and Country takes over in the higher levels of trim, starting with the Chrysler Town and Country Touring.

The Dodge Grand Caravan Express now features “Super Stow-N-Go,” which means that the seats now fold away with the touch of a button. It also comes standard with steering wheel audio controls, stability control, power heated mirrors, tri-zone climate control, seat-mounted side airbags, six speaker stereo, and tinted glass. Sold in that form, it is competitive with the current top of the line Dodge.

The Dodge Caravan Mainstreet adds body-color mirrors, power second row windows, one-touch power down front windows, and aluminum wheels. Stepping up to the Crew adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, backup camera, trip computer, satellite radio, roofrack, fog lamps, adjustable pedals, power doors, leather-wrapped wheel and shifter, eight-way power driver’s seat, and Super Console. The Dodge “Man Van” will be the Dodge Caravan R/T, adding an all-black interior, body-color grille, unique wheels, red stitched seats, performance suspension, and roof-rack delete. Perfect for convincing Dads into finally buying that minvan.

Chrysler starts after Dodge ends; the base Touring model will come with all the equipment of the Crew, as well as a power liftgate, automatic headlamps, and SafetyTec. The latter includes blind spot monitor, rear cross path detection, rain sensing wipers, parking assist, and “smart beam” headlights. Above even this exalted Chrysler is the Touring L, with leather seats, heated in the first row; second and third row window shades; remote start; and eight-way power passenger seat. Dual DVD is optional at this level.

Finally, the Chrysler Town & Country Limited is set to sell far a far higher premium than the other models; in return, buyers will get a distinctive minivan with chrome-plated wheels, nine-speaker amplified audio, heated steering wheel, second row heated seats, upgraded leather, UConnect, seat/mirror/radio memory, HID headlamps, keyless driving, navigation system, and dual-DVD video.

The difference between the base Dodge Grand Caravan Express and the top of the line Chrysler Town & Country Limited may be as high as $14,000. For pricing information, contact your Local Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Dealer.
